When the Familiar Is Not a Good Thing

Most losses teach us how good we had it and how much we took for granted.

Some losses, however — curiously, the most significant ones — teach us how bad we had it and that it is fine to open to new experiences that do not remind us of the past. It may take a while for feelings to follow the revelation, close some doors, leave behind what can not be resolved, and openly prefer something better, or claim something more appropriate.

“Be glad that you lost that old weight, who can carry that forever, anyway” is what my mentor told me more than once.
