I admit that I instinctively loathed him and his music, the bizarre performances, make-up, outfits and attitude.
I did not think of him as being rock'n roll, but as a grim cartoon of self-hate and hate and the embodiment of a culture that was eating itself.
True enough - he never hid behind a facade. This is where I think that many misunderstood him, or resonated, perhaps, with the glamour of being a misfit. There was nothing behind the facade, though: what you saw is what you got with Marilyn Manson.
