Over the past four years, a growing number of reiki-curious and new (!) meditators have joined our Fridays. So I made a few tweaks to the invitation to include all who wish to participate. How exciting to see more interest in hands-on healing and self-discovery.

If you are new here, make use of the beneficial practices as well as you can. What can seem like detail overload at first will flow together nicely soon and facilitate quantum leaps.

Keep Up the Great Work (In the Coming 20 Years, Too!)

Earth Send has been a fortunate fixture since 25 June 2005, and we still do it every Friday. From the 24 h window, each participant selects the time that works best for him or her. So we sync by day and are flexible about the hour.

In two months, we are celebrating a major milestone: our 20th anniversary. Yay! What an achievement, what a ride, and we are continuing!

Proactivity and Keep In Touch

while you are receiving reiki. Be fair to the group: show that your goals matter to you. To the best of your ability, keep us updated about any progress and news. Feedback boosts the group’s morale and team spirit: joy shared is joy multiplied.

The one exception to this code of conduct is for terminally ill patients and those who can only receive — a core group of recipients of our reiki treatments and on our healing lists.

As we send reiki to plenty of processes that require alert engagement, like a promotion, passing an exam, completing education, launching a business, befriending and partnering up, childbirth, recovering from an acute illness, natural disaster or shock, and so on, do your part in the healing and manifesting.

Do stay in communication. Especially if you want to extend or renew a healing request.

Before Meditation: Set an Intention
A simple intention like, “By joining today, I draw to me what is for my highest good,” will do — until you formulate your own.

Using your own words makes a difference. Resonant, personal intentions switch on the mind in a convincing fashion.

Nature’s Clues

Observe what is happening in your corner of the earth. How can you harness the energies and seize the opportunities of the moment?

Let me give you a few examples from my corner:

Last week, I noticed tree blossoms and spring messengers in well-maintained gardens and the vigorous growth of ruderal species throughout the city. These adaptable –and often highly nutritious– soil fixers loosen, humidify and detoxify the soil, remove heavy metals, or draw up nutrients for other plants. They improve the ecosystem and even seem to migrate in response to the humans and animals they coexist with. One day, science will prove that vegetation is more interactive with other life forms than we have realized and that its reliable curative intelligence is something we could be learning from.

As we move into the second stage of spring, community gardens are opening. Soon everything will be lush with green, and green feeds body and soul.

Canada has recently come alive in a love fest of solidarity and self-worth (provoked, no doubt, by the orange man’s jabs and tariffs). We’ll know soon if it has spread to politics, too; our elections are coming up. If it hasn’t, well, just witnessing it is wonderful. May it linger for a while!

I am also learning how to veganize crowd-pleasing dishes — for get-togethers. I can live on repeat dishes, but the promise of parties has motivated me since I can remember. As a young adult, long before I learned to cook, I was fond of making party salads. I recalled why, and I am using the same reason to expand my plant-based staples. (Whatever works!)

Oh, you want more than micro actions?

Many vegans have shared how changing their diet raised their consciousness like nothing else before. Many gardeners talk about the deep and fruitful transformation that took place just by taking care of the soil. Every permaculturist I have talked to told me that whole systems thinking blew their minds and that “everything changed” after in a wondrous way.

So a short-cut to a satisfying and sustainable new identity may be to try it on: “This is what I do now. This is who I am.”

Beneficial Practices for Earth Send

Have a Practice Space

  • Indoors: Mat or rug; gemstones and a plant; a water pitcher and glass or teapot and cup; soundscape of percussion, mantras, natural sounds, background pink noise, grounding, non-distracting music; flag, poster, slogan or sculpture that is spiritually meaningful to you. None of these are must-haves, but suggestions. A loving touch has an impact on the psyche and on self-respect. A designated spot in your home for practice declares its importance and raises your chance to stick with it. Keep it clutter-free.
  • Outdoors: when the weather is fine, why not?

Land and Watershed Awareness

Do you know where the water from your faucet comes from? Learn about your watershed. How does water flow around your neighbourhood and property? Where in your soil can water collect and slow down its passage and hydrate the ecosystem? What do you know about water retention landscapes?

Who are the people who took care of the land that you are on? If they were your ancestors, what would they tell you about it? If, like so many of us, you are not on the soil of your ancestors, can you recall their connection to their land? Have you kept up something that connects you to your ancestors? A go-to first remedy, perhaps, a tincture, tea, an ointment, a syrup, a favourite ferment? A green thumb, an affection for the forest, for salt water or sweet water, a taste for nature observation and outdoorsy hobbies? What about savvy household management, rain water saving, biodegradable, self-made cleaning products and other customs that may have been passed down to you? Get conscious of what they are.

What about the caretakers of this land, do you relate to them? What have you learned about the history of your place? How many signs can you find that people before cared about the land and the water that surrounds you?

Acknowledge the land and the water and the fact that people have left you with vital soil and drinkable water and a few foundations you can build on.

Reiki Precepts

Just for today:

  • I will not worry.
  • I will not anger.
  • I will work honestly.
  • I will honor my elders and teachers.
  • I will be grateful for my life’s blessings.

We don’t just recite these precepts, we apply them, and if need be, we course correct.

Let me say more about it.

Precept 1: If you find yourself easily worried, go to the bottom of it, and ask yourself how you can trust in life a bit more.

Precept 2: if you find yourself irritated too often, acknowledge the effect of your anger on your quality of life and find constructive ways to let off steam. Perhaps you have an excess of energy due to anger: how could you contribute to a cause where your excess energy was an agent for good?

Precept 3: I have written about honest work in many Earth Send invites. It has been a hot topic among Western practitioners since reiki came to the West.

Precept 4: honour our elders and teachers:

Our Gallery of Mudita addresses the topic in an exploratory way. We gather all the people who have been motivating us to become more humane human beings, braver, more competent, more creative. Mikao Usui, the founder of reiki, is in everyone’s Gallery of Mudita, as he is a teacher and spiritual ancestor of all practitioners and has brought us together.

Precept 5: if you find yourself ungrateful too often, what about your life is unfulfilled? Are you ignoring signs about finding other ways to be of service?

I can provide more observations about ingratitude later. Today is not the day for reverse psychology. I will stay on the sweet side.

Inner Smile, A Warm Body Scan (For Everyone)

Truly, a sublime gift to yourself: put yourself into a better state of mind, stay connected with your body, and smile from within.

Swallow your smile into your throat, your chest area and heart, then in your belly. From there, move your smile through all your organs, to your extremities, hands and fingers, feet and toes. Move it back into your heart again. Then, move it up to your head, brush with your inner smile over your face, hairline, over your hair and neck, through your brain, and the organs in your head, your eyes, your nose, your mouth…. Let your inner smile touch every piece of you.

Train yourself in the series of steps, outlined by the Taoist Inner Smile, and you have a practice for life.

Bird’s Eye View

Imagine going upward, to the ceiling, through the roof, and looking down on your neighbourhood and yourself, now a dot in your vision, quite like a bird would see everything in flight.

What do you want to communicate to yourself on the ground? Do you have any pointers about what your next step should be?

Don’t worry if the answer is something super simple, like “Rest”, “Pass”, “Go there, now”. The simpler the guidance, the more credible it is.

(You can experiment and not take it and see what your results are versus the results you get when you follow it.)

Solar Water / Sun-Charged Water

Leave a glass of water in the sunlight and drink it. Solarized water has been used for centuries across many cultures as a tonic. I want you to experience its benefits, especially now as we move through the sun-rich time of the year.

Never solarize water in plastic containers.

Island of Self

The Buddha taught his followers about the “Island of Self,” an inner retreat where they could charge their batteries, gather courage, restore themselves and get inspired. We use this notion in the same way: we collect sensations and nature elements that we want our Island of Self to offer. Browse for well-being and beauty, and store it as a memory for your Island Of Self.

In days to come, use the scores as a feedback loop to improve your self-care. Where do you need to give yourself more attention and adjust?

I will point out our two main forms of resistance: the fainter one — which you can respond to with a fun solution (I called it the hula hoop solution, because, to me, hula hoop was an accessible, no prep, pure fun type of workout that got me moving) and the more vehement type, where you bring your subpersonalities and whatever else is sabotaging you on board to take better care of yourself. The hula hoop solution works in situations when you are “not feeling it” and “can’t find the time” for something that you understand is important and even urgent; while the internal cooperation model is appropriate for strong, rationally defensible and fear-driven avoidance.

What was good this week?

What do I want to repeat?

What do I want to have more of?

Record that after the session. You can begin to display bundles of delight where you pass by. Those could be keepsakes or symbols of the events and conditions that raise your appreciation. A glass jar can hold a number of small things and when you shake it, it will give you a new view.

Now if your gratitude container is a glass jar, too, label them for clarity, even if you keep similar objects in them.

Earth Resonance

There is no way around it: we are going to pick up difficult, sad, maddening info about our globe. It helps to remember that we are of little use when we are petrified and depressed. We were equipped to feel everything when we came here, and managing emotions is truly an art. The mind can serve the emotions well by pre-screening info through the filter of “Become teachable, and mist everything else”. We learn from solutions that are ample in number, and we gently spray the places that unnerve us with water, for water is an essential element for and of life, water cleans, water cools, water moves toxins, water refreshes, water is an occasion to pause (and pauses are key when we are stunned and without all the facts and without a plan), water communicates (goodness) and water heals.

Some ecologists have suggested a joyful approach, the joyful identification with our solutions in the face of devastation. It is not easy to stay joyful while trying to absorb everything that is being thrown at us and understanding that it was people who caused most of today’s problems. Yet, it is not healthy to keep ourselves in spectator seats either and imagine that there is nothing anyone could do to make a difference. Stay away from doom-and-gloom broadcasts. Do media fasts. Learn about solutions. Contribute. Give yourself the time to discover how you can. Protect your mind from over-the-top negativity. The Serenity Prayer has taught us to apply ourselves where we can. Water, with its clarity, fluidity and freshness can refresh, move and clarify our thoughts. Our planet is mostly water, too.
