Interesting fact about Georgia O’Keeffe who was born on this day in 1887:
The painter turned down many interviews or cut them short when she noticed that she was expected to make statements about how she felt about women’s empowerment. Her artwork — highly sensual, stunning depictions of the sacred feminine or the sacred feminine in nature — was too precious to her to get labelled in any way.
The artist refused to be appropriated by one group and dismissed affiliations with subcultures, minorities and feminism by saying something in the line of “too many complaints, too little work.”
I don’t have the quote on hand, I read it 2 decades ago, and it left an impression on me. I don’t need to elaborate on what she meant, but why did it stick in my mind?
It is in line with resonance and with the law of attraction:
you won’t find in circumstances what you are meant to create. There is no substitute for work, for your own self-expression, for your art.
Fighting a paradigm is rhetorical and exhausting; the way you transform it is by bringing out what is inside.
